PIN generator

Made on your device. Never sent or stored.

Random PINs for phones, cards, alarms and locks, with the obvious ones filtered out.

Why skip some PINs

People choose PINs in predictable ways: repeated digits, runs like 1234 and 9876, pairs like 1212, and years like 1987 or 2024. An attacker with a handful of tries starts with exactly those. With "skip guessable PINs" on, the generator rejects them and draws again.

That rule removes a few hundred of the 10,000 four digit PINs, so it costs almost no entropy and takes away the guesses that work most often.

DigitsPossible PINsEntropy (bits)
410,00013.3
5100,00016.6
61,000,00019.9
8100,000,00026.6
1010,000,000,00033.2

A PIN is only safe because the device limits attempts, locking or wiping after a few wrong tries. Where you can choose, use 6 digits instead of 4: it is 100 times more combinations for two extra taps.

Questions

Is a 4 digit PIN secure?

Only on devices that strictly limit attempts. There are 10,000 four digit PINs, which a computer can try instantly if nothing stops it. Use 6 digits wherever the device allows.

Can I use this for my bank card?

Yes. Generate the PIN here, then set it at your bank or ATM. Do not write it on the card.

Why not use my birthday?

Dates are among the first guesses. Years from 1900 to 2099 alone cover 200 of the 10,000 four digit PINs, and anyone who knows you can narrow it further.
